The Milwaukee Brewers deployed their league leading ninth different starting pitcher on Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates. 25 year old Tobias Myers became the latest player to start for the Brew Crew and he did so by making his MLB debut. Overall he pitched great, but the first pitch that he threw ended up resulting in a home run.
Tobias Myers made his MLB debut for the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, April 23.
After being called up to the big leagues a week prior and not appearing in a game before being optioned back to Triple-A, Tobias Myers was given the nod to start against the Pirates. The right-handed hurler came in with a scouting report indicating that his fastball plays faster than the radar gun indicates (typically low 90s but can reach back and throw mid 90’s at times). A big reason for this is because of the rising shape it has and that is induced by having a high spin rate.
Pittsburgh Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen hit a home run off the first big league pitch from Tobias Myers.
There are no freebies in baseball and that includes the first pitch of your big league career. Facing Andrew McCutchen the first pitch that Myers threw was 90 MPH, slightly in, and about belt high. McCutchen jumped all over it and just kept it within fair territory for a home run. This lead off homer made back-to-back games of leadoff home runs from McCutchen.

Overall the Milwaukee Brewers have to be pleased with the MLB debut from Tobias Myers.
After the leadoff home run Tobias Myers rebounded nicely. He ended up throwing five innings, surrendering just four hits, walking one batter, striking out four, and generating nine whiffs. His day ended after 83 pitches in which he went through the entire Pirates lineup twice and faced McCutchen three times.
Can’t ask for much more from Tobias Myers in his big league debut. Great stuff today:

With DL Hall, Wade Miley, and Jakob Junis all on the injured list it’s likely that Tobias Myers has earned another turn through the starting rotation. If this is the case his next outing could come late this weekend against the New York Yankees or early next week against the Tampa Bay Rays.
