The Green Bay Packers have moved on from a number of cornerstone players over the last few seasons. Players that have quite literally defined the franchise over the last decade or so. Randall Cobb and Aaron Rodgers were two of those players.
One final walk-off together seemed to solidify their future with the team. Cobb has recently opened up about that moment.

The Packers parted ways with Rodgers under acrimonious terms in 2021. According to Rodgers, he was given the option to retire or leave, but Packers claimed the player was unreachable (insert the Facetime story). Various narratives have been offered about why Rodgers’ 18-year career in Green Bay came to an end. Now, Randall Cobb has weighed in on the matter.
According to Sneha Singh of Essentially Sports:
There had been underlying tensions between Rodgers and the Packers for years. The QB had publicly called for the franchise’s culture to improve in 2021 and then after being offered a three-year, $150 million contract extension, the top brass wasn’t satisfied with Rodgers’ commitment and effort.
These issues kept brewing until the two parties went their separate ways as Rodgers went to Jets last year.
During a recent appearance on the Bussin With The Boys podcast, Russell Cobb, who himself has an interesting history with the Packers, shared his thoughts on the infamous breakup.
“I think it was time. I think, when someone is somewhere for two decades, I think that a taste of something different and exposure to something different is good. Green Bay, I think it was time,” he said. He added that the franchise felt that the backup, Jordan Love, was ready to take the reins of the crew.
Love was picked up Packers in the 2020 Draft, despite having Aaron Rodgers as their QB. This also is reported to have affected the relations between Rodgers and the franchise. Packers were ready to move on and planning for the future and three years later they were ready.
Cobb added, “They were ready to put him (Love)in that situation. They had developed him. And it was his turn. They’re not looking at the short-term, two to three-year plan – they’re looking at the long-term picture. That’s what most businesses do.”

The New Era In Green Bay Has Got Off To A Good Start

Following the trade of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, Love became the Packers’ starting quarterback in 2023.
After a rocky start to the season, the 25-year-old bounced back. A total of 64.2% of his passes were completed for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Despite being 9-8, the Packers made the postseason under Love’s leadership. In the Wild Card Round, he led them to a 48-32 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
Even though the Packers lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round, it was a positive season for a rebuilding team.
Heading into the 2024 season, Love seems extremely optimistic about their chances, stating, “Since I’ve been here, I feel like this is the closest the team’s been … I think this team’s at an awesome spot right now.”
