The Wisconsin football staff announced yesterday afternoon who the starting quarterback will be for the upcoming 2024 season.
Despite winning the starting role, Miami Hurricanes transfer quarterback Tyler Van Dyke stated that he will continue to ‘fight’ for his position. Van Dyke, who beat Braedyn Locke for the starting role, previously had been benched in his career and understands that his role is contingent upon success. With the quarterback setting into his role, he now believes it is time to focus on this upcoming season.
Wisconsin Football Staff Names Tyler Van Dyke the Starting Quarterback For the 2024 Season
In a move that was expected to come, the Wisconsin football staff announced that quarterback Tyler Van Dyke would be the starter for the 2024 season. Van Dyke was previously the starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes, but entered the transfer portal after the conclusion of this past season.
After landing Van Dyke, the Wisconsin staff held an open quarterback competition for the starting role, which was quickly narrowed down to two. Both Van Dyke and Braedyn Locke have been competing against each other the past few weeks for the role. However, Van Dyke had taken all of the first-team snaps over the past week, essentially putting an end to the competition in the eyes of the staff.
Despite Role Change, Van Dyke Focused On Continuing to Work
While many people might take their foot off the gas after getting a promotion the might want, Van Dyke is focused on continuing to work at a high-level. The quarterback is no stranger to losing his spot, as he previously had been benched in favor of another quarterback at Miami. However, this time around Van Dyke is confident and working hard to prove himself beyond what the staff expected.
Would a Midseason Quarterback Change Ever Become a Possibility For the Wisconsin Badgers Football Team?
If there is anyone who understands what it is like to lose your starting job, Van Dyke would certainly be that person. During his tenure with the Hurricanes, Van Dyke was both benched and involved in a regular season quarterback battle. After filling in for D’Eriq King who suffered a shoulder injury, Van Dyke entered the 2022 season as the starter over Jake Garcia.
Garcia eventually took the starting role from Van Dyke, starting a three-game stretch and later taking over for Van Dyke when he was benched mid-game. Van Dyke was also benched against Florida State last season in favor of the third-string quarterback at the time.
While Van Dyke needs to work to keep his starting role, a situation like that of the Hurricanes is something Wisconsin is working to avoid. Head Coach Luke Fickell pointed out during the Big Ten Conference media day that the past handling of Van Dyke likely contributed to how he performed.
The Wisconsin football staff is aiming to give the quarterback time and assistance moving forward to prevent the same issues from occurring.
