Plenty of players have stepped up for the Wisconsin football team during the past two weeks, but none quite like a freshman cornerback from Florida.
Xavier Lucas, a former four-star recruit from Florida, has been one of the most exciting players to watch this camp for Wisconsin. Lucas previously received high praise during the Big Ten Conference media day when starting cornerback Ricardo Hallman stated, “I don’t know how they let him out of Florida.” Now after a successful first half of camp, the question is whether or not Lucas can carve out a role for himself on defense.
Wisconsin Football Freshman Cornerback Xavier Lucas Turning Heads Early
If the finger can be pointed towards one specific player two weeks into camp who has impressed the most, it would have to be cornerback Xavier Lucas. Lucas was once a four-star recruit coming from the notable American Heritage football program in Florida. The defensive back eventually picked the Wisconsin football program over Miami (FL), Iowa, Illinois, and Florida State.
After signing on as a safety, the Wisconsin staff has since found a home for Lucas as a cornerback due to his exceptional coverage ability.
In just two weeks of live camp for the Wisconsin football team, Lucas has already made his presence felt and disrupted the quarterback during each practice. Lucas has impressed both the staff and his teammates early on, which could be a sign of more to come for the young defensive back.
What Does Lucas Offer to the Wisconsin Football Defense
On the field, Lucas is a lengthy and quick cornerback that has the ability to cover a variety of different receiving styles. Lucas can stay with receivers down field and utilize the sideline to his advantage, or can come down to blow up a play in run support. The defensive back was initially listed as a safety, but has since since a home for himself as an outside cornerback.
Lucas is a willing tackler as well and does not shy away from contact when he needs to make the play happen. A season ago, Lucas recorded four interceptions and seven pass breakups to solidify himself as an excellent defender of the air.
Can Lucas Find a Way Onto the Field this Season for the Wisconsin Badgers Football Team?

For Lucas, finding his way onto the field this upcoming season could become a difficult task due to the depth that Wisconsin has at cornerback. Along with Lucas, the Wisconsin football team also has Ricardo Hallman, RJ Delancy III, Max Lofy, Nyzier Fourqurean, Jonas Duclona, and Amare Snowden at the position.
It is going to be a tough decision for Wisconsin moving forward as they begin to see which players are going to play the majority of snaps this upcoming season. Lucas could potentially earn playing time this season, but he would need to both stay stellar throughout the remainder of camp along with outperforming some upperclassmen. It has been truly great to see Lucas impress, but it might just be a flash of what is to come in the future and not necessarily this season.
