The Wisconsin football team carries a 30-plus year tradition of success, and coach Luke Fickell has embraced this tradition from the start.
The Athletic recently had a chance to sit down with the Wisconsin Badgers athletic director, Chris McIntosh, who spoke about the changes and difficulties coach Luke Fickell has embraced. Fickell was hired last November to become the new head coach of the Wisconsin football program ahead of the 2023 season. In a short period of time, Fickell has already made tremendous strides after taking on the historic job opening.
Wisconsin Football Has Traditions To Maintain, And Coach Fickell Is Just The Person For The Job
The Wisconsin Badgers football program is one of the most historic and storied programs in all of collegiate football. The Badgers have been a consistent force within collegiate football for decades now, and each season marks another year tacked onto the program’s legacy. Behind the legacy of the program lies the image that the team most uphold. The Badgers have developed a winning identity over the course of their history, and last season marked a major change in their image.
Coach Paul Chryst was fired before the end of the season after failing to meet the lofty expectations set by the program. Wisconsin felt that the program began to stray too far away from their past traditions, which inevitably ended the Chryst era in Madison. Wisconsin football has program “standards” that they must uphold in regards to their success. As coach Luke Fickell prepared to take on the prestigious Badgers coaching job, the experienced head coach learned quickly what taking the helm in Madison truly meant.
Wisconsin Badgers Athletic Director Chris McIntosh acknowledged the difficulty behind the position when speaking with The Athletic recently. When speaking about the lengthy history of the program, McIntosh had the following to say:
“There’s a couple different ways to look at it. There’s like a glass half-full or half-empty way of looking at it. On one hand, you can look at that and say there’s an extremely high expectation here. You could have a negative view of that like it is a burden that needs to be lived up to. The flip side to that is I think where the focus has been is what an incredible privilege to be a part of a program that has the desire to or expects to be great, to pursue championships, to win championships.”

McIntosh went on to say that he believes Fickell possesses the mindset needed to be the coach of the Wisconsin football team.
Fickell Era: Wisconsin Football Entering Uncharted Waters With New Staff
As McIntosh pointed out during his interview, there is a prestigious history behind the Wisconsin football program that must be carried on. As Chryst was fired, it marked the end of his chapter as the head coach due to his inability to uphold the standards of the past. Now, with Fickell already making immense changes in a short period of time, it makes the coach seem more than capable of taking on the extreme expectations.
The head coach was able to turn around a small program in Cincinnati by developing plenty of historical moments within the program. Fickell has proved during his past coaching job that the talented leader has the ability to exceed expectations, and hopefully he can do the same for the Badgers in the future.
