The Wisconsin football staff has landed yet another recruit, with an Australian transfer punter joining the Badgers squad.
Atticus Bertrams, an Australian Prokick Academy graduate, comes over to Madison as a scholarship transfer from the USC Trojans. Bertrams was originally a 2022 football recruit, signing his letter of intent to play with the Trojans a year ago. Now, coach Luke Fickell has added the talented punter from the transfer portal to grow the team once again.
Wisconsin Football Staff Lands Transfer Punter/Kicker Atticus Bertrams
The Australian kicking product Atticus Bertrams attended Prokick Australia, which is an academy credited with 190 total athletes receiving scholarships. The program has also produced six Ray Guy College Punter Of The Year Award winners, 15 CFL/NFL contracts, and two Pro Bowl appearances as well. The academy has produced some of the absolute best kicking and punting talent that has come out of Australia.
Bertrams is the latest recruit to leave the academy with a scholarship offer, after joining the USC Trojans the past season. However, Bertrams has now found himself on the Wisconsin football team after being left off the most recent Trojans roster. Bertrams signed his letter of intent and arrived on campus, but later left the team for undisclosed reasons.
Coach Luke Fickell has been trying to replace multi-year starter Andy Vujnovich and found just the punter to do so. Fickell and Prokick Australia have an extremely close relationship, with Fickell landing two punters from the program during his time with the Bearcats. James Smith and Mason Fletcher were both accomplished punters for Fickell, and now the coach hopes to find the same success with his newest Australian transfer.
Fickell has made it clear that the Wisconsin football team wants to improve in every possible fashion. This plan did not stop at special teams, with Nathanial Vakos transferring to help with the kicking duties. Fickell has now doubled down by landing a highly touted punter in hopes of solidifying his special teams units.
Wisconsin Badgers Football Prepared For All-Around Success In 2023
While landing a punter may not be the announcement that Badger fans were hoping for, Bertrams is a solid addition for the team. Bertrams is able to successfully fill a position of need for Wisconsin that can seriously alter the success of a team. Fickell is not looking to cut corners anywhere, and that starts with the special teams play. losing valuable yards each time a kick is returned or poorly kicked hurts the team more than most care to admit.
The Wisconsin football team is still coming together as the coaching staff prepares to create their plan going into the 2023 season. For the Wisconsin Badgers football team, this upcoming season will either be a massive turning point for the program, or a major bump in the road to recovering their past success. Wisconsin still needs to prepare themselves for a tough upcoming year, but once the team and staff are able to do so the Badgers should be a much different team from the one that fans saw a year ago.
After adding Atticus Bertrams to the roster, the Wisconsin Badgers will likely continue to search the transfer portal for more talent.
