The Wisconsin Badgers had the most disappointing seasons that the program has experienced in decades in 2024. The second year with Luke Fickell as head coach was supposed to be a year that saw the Badgers take monumental strides forward. However, it ended in a 5-7 record and no Bowl Game for the first time in over two decades.
Throughout the disappointing 2024 campaign, many Wisconsin fans called for Fickell to be fired. The disappointing play on the field, poor quarterback production, and the overall underwhelming aura of the program has left a bitter taste in their mouths.
One Badgers star player, though, believes Fickell has the program going in the right direction.
Wisconsin Badgers Star Hunter Wohler Has High Praise for Luke Fickell
Safety Hunter Wohler, who is leaving Wisconsin for the NFL, is one of the many NFL Draft prospects participating in the Senior Bowl. Wisconsin Sports Heroics reporter Matt Lombardo had a chance to meet with Wohler after practice on Tuesday.
He asked the Badgers safety for his thoughts on Fickell and the future of the football program at Wisconsin.
“We went through some stuff. But, coach Fick’s a great dude and a great coach,” Wohler to Lombardo. “He wants the best for his entire team. Me and him got along really well, and saw eye-to-eye on a lot of things. I think he’s going to get that program in the right direction. Sadly, I won’t be there for when that happens, but he’ll get them straight.”
Lombardo then asked Wohler what he believes are the keys to getting the Wisconsin football program turned around.
He responded, “I think just competing every day and understanding that every day that you come in the building, you know that you have to workout and to train to win. There’s someone else training just as hard. “That has to be the message for them this offseason. It’s about ‘we’re not where we want to be, and we have to do a lot more to get there.'”
There have been many former Wisconsin players, especially ones not recruited by Fickell, who have been critical of him and the program since he took over.
Wohler, however, seems to have a much brighter view of things going forward.
