Stevie Mitchell continues to play well for No. 9 Marquette basketball. He was on top of his game again on Tuesday night, as he helped the Golden Eagles navigate through Kam Jones’ foul trouble and beat the Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Coming off a 21-point performance in a win over the Villanova Wildcats at home last Friday, Mitchell scored 10 points in a crucial five-minute span in the second half of the Butler game, allowing Marquette basketball to steady the ship amid Jones’ foul issues.

Apparently, Mitchell got a spark before the game when he received a motivational talk from Golden Eagles head coach Shaka Smart.

Via Ben Steele of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

“His mind is so clear on ‘OK, what do I need to do to go help my team win on either end of the floor,’ ” Smart said. “We don’t take it for granted that that’s just a given.

“I challenged him at our shootaround. I said ‘You played great in our last game.’ I said ‘You know what’s uncommon – that was our game theme, uncommon – it’s uncommon to play great and impact winning the next game after you did that the game before. He did that tonight.”

Apart from his scoring, Mitchell had five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal in 33 minutes of action versus the Bulldogs.

Mitchell and the Golden Eagles are now up to 18-3 on the season with a 9-1 record against Big East rivals. Marquette will be bracing for a huge matchup next against the reigning two-time national champions UConn Huskies on Saturday at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.
