Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson is expecting to be cut in March, according to league sources who told Dianna Russini. She is a Senior NFL Insider for The Athletic. Wilson was benched on Wednesday in favor of Jarrett Stidham for the final two games of the 2023 NFL regular season.
The Denver Broncos are 7-8 this season after starting the year 1-5. Russell Wilson was traded from the Seattle Seahawks two offseasons ago. Wilson this season with Denver completed 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
Stidham has not recorded any stats this season for the Denver Broncos. This was an interesting move to say the least for head coach Sean Payton. It appears the relationship between head coach Sean Payton and Russell Wilson is over. Which NFL teams could sign him once he is possibly released in March?
Former Wisconsin Badgers Quarterback Russell Wilson’s Best Chance Could be the Pittsburgh Steelers
Mitchell Trubisky’s contract will be up at the end of the year, so it is possible the Pittsburgh Steelers won’t bring him back. Kenny Pickett has not turned out as planned and he may need some competition. Mason Rudolph is the third quarterback that Pittsburgh has used this season.
If they miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Steelers will need to find a quarterback. Pickett regressed from the first to the second year and it appears as if he isn’t the guy. Pittsburgh is based on Super Bowls and they haven’t won it since 2009. Russell Wilson throwing to George Pickens sounds fascinating.
Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings will need to make a decision on a quarterback after this season. They are not in a prime position to draft a stud this year. Kirk Cousins is a free agent and it appears as if the Vikings may not have any interest in bringing him back.
Wide receiver Justin Jefferson spoke about how important Cousins has been to them. However, it has not worked out for them since he got hurt, and have played Nick Mullens, Josh Dobbs, and Jaren Hall. Russell Wilson throwing passes to Justin Jefferson next season sounds enticing.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots don’t have an attractive wide receiver room, but they need a quarterback to compete in a tough AFC East. The Buffalo Bills have Josh Allen, the Miami Dolphins have Tua Tagovailoa, and the New York Jets have Aaron Rodgers. Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe don’t appear to be the answer to winning games for them in the long term.
Russell Wilson would be a major upgrade over them. New England would need to get him some wide-receiver help. They have a very good defense and running game to help him out. Wilson will have many more suitors this offseason other than those three teams. It will be a very interesting market for him this offseason.
