The San Francisco 49ers and Nick Bosa agreed to a five-year $170 million deal on Wednesday, making Bosa the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Bosa had been holding out all of training camp in hopes of securing a new deal, and now the 49ers have their guy in advance of their Week one matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Nick Bosa earns deserved contract from the San Francisco 49ers
It’s ridiculous that it took this long for the San Francisco 49ers to give Nick Bosa his well-deserved pay-day.
He’s the best defensive end in the league. (Via Fox Sports) His 34 sacks over the past two seasons top the NFL, and he won Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 after totaling 18.5 sacks during the regular season.
After trading away Trey Lance, the Niners needed to get this deal done with Nick Bosa to ensure that this team can stay in a competitive window without Bosa: the Niners are just a good defense, but with him, they are at the top of the NFL.
What does the San Francisco 49ers deal for Nick Bosa mean for Kansas City Chiefs DE Chris Jones?
Nothing will change on that front. Kansas City paid superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes a boatload of money to stay in KC, but that big of a commitment comes with its own set of challenges. The team financially cannot afford to pay everyone, and that reared its ugly head last year when Tyreek Hill wanted to be the highest-paid receiver in the league, and they traded him to Miami for draft picks.
Chris Jones could find himself in a similar situation where he wants to be the highest-paid defensive player; it won’t happen because Travis Kelce’s contract is up in a couple of years, and they will be more inclined to pay him over Jones.
Nick Bosa’s contract will hurt the negotiations between Jones and the Chiefs. He knows the Chiefs won’t give him record-setting money, and they will be more inclined to wait until Jones returns.
The team is already preparing to play without Jones on Thursday’s night game against the Lions, and Jones has said he is willing to sit out until Week Eight.
