Apparently, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is the 17th-best head coach in the NFL. That ranking is very questionable, and he really should be ranked a bit higher. Yes, he is not perfect, but what NFL head coach is? Not to mention the accomplishments he has had in a short amount of time. At this point, it is pretty clear that Matt LaFleur is the most disrespected coach in the NFL.
Did Ross Tucker Not Consider Matt Lafluer’s Resumé?
In his four years as Packers head coach, Matt LaFleur has a 47-19 record, which is really impressive. He has had 13-plus wins in three years straight from 2019-202, including two NFC Championship appearances. In addition, he won the NFC North title for three straight years. Meanwhile, Mike McCarthy only won 13-plus games with Aaron Rodgers once, in 2011. Regardless of having Rodgers, winning 13 games in the NFL is not an easy thing to do, especially three years straight. These accomplishments alone really show how good of coach he has been in the NFL.
Dan Campbell Is Better Than Matt LaFleur?
The list via Ross Tucker ranked Dan Campbell ahead of LaFleur at 16. Here is the thing, Campbell has been a very solid coach for the Detroit Lions as the team plays hard for him every year. However, he should not be ranked ahead of LaFleur. The results have not been there yet for him to be ranked higher.
He is definitely building something with the Lions, but as of right now, he has a record currently record of 17-28. Yes, it is fair to say that he was in a tough situation with the Lions as they were rebuilding, but the NFL, like any other sport, is a results-oriented business. Until he can produce more wins and actually make the playoffs, he should not be ranked above Matt LaFleur.
Ross Tucker Should Consider the Packers’ New Culture
Former Packers and now Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy did create a very good culture in his time with the team. Players did respect and loved McCarthy and played very hard for him. However, it was very clear that in 2018 the culture he created got stale, and the team stopped responding to him. It was just time for a change and something fresh. Matt LaFleur came in and brought a lot of energy to the team. He really gave the team something much different, and the team responded well. The culture change of LaFleur resulted in a lot of early success for him as an NFL head coach.
Matt LaFleur Kept the Team Fighting in a Down 2022 Season
2022 was the first time LaFleur finished under .500 in his NFL head coaching career. The Packers, unfortunately, finished with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs, also for the first time in his career. But despite that, he had the team still competing. At one point, the Packers were 4-8 with no hope of making the playoffs and could have packed it in early or even tanked for a better draft position. Not only did the Packers continue to fight, but they also ended up winning four straight games to bring their record to 8-8. They controlled their own destiny and competed for the last wild card spot in the NFC playoff picture.
However, they lost a must-win game to the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. Still, Matt LaFleur’s team did not quit despite their record, and it almost helped them make the playoffs. That says a lot about him as a coach, as he will have his players play hard for him till the very end – just something for Ross Tucker for consider.
