The NFL regular season is right around the corner. The Packers face the Minnesota Vikings in week one at US Bank Stadium. Let’s take a deep dive into this stellar week one matchup.
Key Matchups
Jaire Alexander vs Justin Jefferson. This is a truly elite matchup. Alexander is one of the top cornerbacks in the league and Jefferson is one of the top receivers in the league. Last season, Jefferson torched the Packers at home for 8 receptions, 169 yards, and 2 touchdowns and Minnesota won by three although Alexander was injured. At Lambeau Jefferson was held to 6 receptions for 58 yards although Kirk Cousins did not play for Minnesota and Alexander was out again. If Alexander can limit Jefferson to smaller numbers this season it would be a great sign for the Packers.
Minnesota’s secondary vs Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers dominated the Vikings last season. In total, he completed 52/71 passes in two games against the Vikings last season while throwing 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. For the Vikings it won’t be about shutting down Aaron Rodgers but more so slowing him down. If Rodgers dominates Minnesota like last season it’s hard to imagine the Vikings overcoming his greatness to win the game.
Kevin O’Connell vs Matt LaFleur. New Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell will be motivated to start off his tenure with a win over Green Bay. Matt LaFleur has been an excellent head coach for the Packers as he has posted a 39-10 record since becoming the Packers head coach. It is unknown what to expect from the Vikings in their first game from O’Connell. However the chess match between LaFleur and O’Connell will play a major factor in this game.
Prediction
This should be an excellent matchup. Packers vs Vikings in week one. It doesn’t get much better than this. US Bank Stadium will be loud and the Vikings should come out hot. However the Packers should keep it close enough in the beginning to edge out a close win. The Packers will win 28-27 in an epic back and forth game.
