The Packers boast one of the most exciting young rosters across the NFL, built around a wunderkind quarterback in Jordan Love, and a defense that’s capable of punching above its weight and forcing timely turnovers.
However, following a listless effort in the NFC Wild Card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, general manager Brian Gutekunst, head coach Matt LaFleur, and the Packers are forced back to the drawing board and into some difficult evaluations ahead of a pivotal offseason in Green Bay.
Matt LaFleur Would Join Select Company as a Super Bowl Winning Coach
Even though the Packers have plenty of things to be optimistic about in terms of building out a roster capable of competing for championships, Green Bay may already have missed its window to hoist the Lombardi Trophy with LaFleur at the helm.
As NFL reporter Bob McGinn points out, only five head coaches in the history of the sport have won a Super Bowl after their first seven seasons: Andy Reid, in his seventh with the Chiefs and 14 with the Eagles, John Madden, in his eighth with the Raiders, Hank Stram, in his 10th with the Chiefs, Tom Landy, in his 12th with the Cowboys, and Bill Cowher Knoll in his 14th with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
There’s certainly no reason to write LaFleur off, though he likely needs to make some major adjustments in the coming months, history shows him leading the Packers to a Super Bowl at this stage of his career would be a very rare feat.
