The Packers‘ disappointing finish to the 2024 NFL season, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card round was the culmination of a disappointing final few weeks of the regular season where flaws in quarterback Jordan Love‘s game and the offense began to emerge.
While there is little doubt that Love remains one of the more promising, and gifted, young quarterbacks across the NFL the Packers never quite adjusted to defenses exposing some of his biggest weaknesses. Nor did head coach Matt LaFleur help find effective ways for his young quarterback to overcome them.
Similarly to how Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator stymied Love by playing man coverage in Week 16, holding Love to just a 38 percent completion percentage on 13 passes against man-coverage, LaFleur and the Packers did Love few favors in Philadelphia, in the playoff game.
As Zone Coverage points out, The Packers lined Love up in the shotgun for the majority of snaps, and he threw three interceptions while passing for just 212 yards with three interceptions.
“Love was one of the NFL’s most efficient quarterbacks using play action in 2023,” Felipe Reis points out. “He ranked third in passing yards, tied for fourth in touchdowns, and posted the sixth-best completion percentage among quarterbacks with at least 60 dropbacks. Love also had the fourth-most first downs and a 113.7 passer rating. Under-center play action was a cornerstone of Green Bay’s offense and a key reason for their late-season run.”
If the Packers are going to find ways to beat the coverages thrown at them by opposing defensive coordinators and play to Love’s strengths, LaFleur and staff would be wise to put Love under center more often in 2025.
