The Green Bay Packers already have one former assistant coach now with the Chicago Bears. Last offseason, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Luke Getsy left the Packers to become the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. Now, a recent report by Jonathan Jones, a NFL insider for CBS Sports, indicates that the Bears have requested permission to interview one of the Packers’ best defensive coaches.
The Bears have requested permission to interview Packers defensive pass game coordinator/DBs coach Jerry Gray for an as-yet-undefined defensive coaching position.
Gray is also interviewing this week in Atlanta for the vacant defensive coordinator position.— Jonathan Jones (@jjones9) January 20, 2023
Jerry Gray Is Turning Out to Be a Hot Name on the Market
As Jones notes in the above Tweet, Packers coach Jerry Gray also is interviewing for the open defensive coordinator position with the Atlanta Falcons. There are numerous defensive coordinator positions open around the NFL, including the Minnesota Vikings who fired Ed Donatell earlier on Thursday. Gray, of course, worked for the Vikings before leaving them for the Green Bay Packers.
The Current Chicago Bears Coaching Staff
Matt Eberflus is the head coach of the Chicago Bears, and the aforementioned Luke Getsy is their offensive coordinator. The Bears’ defensive coordinator is Alan Williams, who has been a coach in the NFL since 2001. Williams was previously the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings from 2012-2013. He also worked as the defensive backs coach of the Detroit Lions from 2014-2017.
Other defensive coaches on the Bears’ staff include Dave Borgonzi (linebackers coach), Andre Curtis (safeties), David Overstreet II (assistant defensive backs). Due to Williams’ background as a defensive backs coach, the Bears do not have a lead defensive backs coach. Could they create a position for Gray if he were hired?
It is important to note that the Bears have just requested permission to interview Gray. The Packers do not have to grant it.
