A former Green Bay Packers wide receiver recently made a strong statement in reference to Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders’ injury. According to Steven Gaither with HBCU, Sanders had to miss Morehouse football camp due to medical complications. He reportedly was in jeopardy of losing his foot.
Deion Sanders has dealt with multiple foot problems
Sanders has had to deal with this threat over the past few years. He had two toes on his left foot amputated. The cause is problem stems from a previous surgery, which allowed blood clots to form.
Per an Associated Press report in 2022, Sanders has had to undergo multiple surgeries to save his leg:
“They were talking about the amputation of toes,” Sanders said. “Then they were talking about the amputation of my leg from the knee down. Then, they were trying to ensure I had life.”
Sanders, 54, underwent several surgeries. He developed a femoral arterial blood clot. He also had compartment syndrome, which meant his leg swelled, and doctors had to flay open his leg to drain fluid. Sanders later had his left foot’s big toe and second toe amputated.
The root cause of all these maladies is his NFL career. Sanders played football games through turf toe injuries. He was operating on a foot that had been dislocated for decades after leaving the league.
Former Green Bay Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s comments
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling responded to Sanders’ report on Twitter. He made an important point about what athletes have to deal with when they get injured. Valdes-Scantling said athletes feel pressure to return from injuries before their body is healed. He said that stress combined with an athletes mindset could cause bad decisions to be made:
“The ugly side of the sports that people forget about. The injuries we gotta deal with when we go home. The life long effects, but y’all a push us to get back out there to soon, and our competitive nature doesn’t help. All around bad situation.”

Valdes-Scantling dealt with injuries during his time with the Packers. He suffered a hamstring issue during the 2021 season and had to be on injured reserve. Head coach Matt LaFleur wanted to be cautious with the injury so Valdes-Scantling didn’t worsen his soft tissue injury.
Injuries are an unfortunate part of sports. And football sees a lot of them as people sprint into each other to make contact. Most athletes in football will deal with an injury. Unfortunately, some of them are more severe, like Sanders. Hopefully, Sanders can have a full recovery soon.
