The Green Bay Packers have a plethora of young players that could have breakout seasons in 2023. Perhaps the most important of these players, though, is Jordan Love, who is taking over as the starting quarterback after Aaron Rodgers held that role for 15 years.
The Packers traded up in the first round in the 2020 NFL Draft to take Love, indicating that he would be the heir to Rodgers’ throne. Of course, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the organization received a large amount of criticism for that pick. In order for all the grief and the big risk they took to acquire to be worth it, Love, he has to be a breakout star in 2023.
Fortunately for them, it appears that Love is well on his way to becoming that star. In fact, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report named Love as his Packers candidate for breakout stars this season.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Will Be a Breakout Star in 2023
Love is not getting very good rankings among NFL quarterbacks in any preseason polls. That is, of course, understandable because he has not played very much over the last three years. In the NFL, as in life, respect is earned, not given freely.
That being said, it may not be long until Love climbs those charts due to the high level of his play. In his article identifying each team’s breakout candidate, Knox wrote of Love:
“Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love essentially has to be a breakout player in 2023 or else he’ll be considered a bust. That’s the expectations for the third-year signal-caller after Green Bay drafted him in the first round and moved on from future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers this offseason.
“Love can become a rising star this year. Green Bay worked to surround him with a strong supporting cast in the offseason, drafting tight end Luke Musgrave, tight end Tucker Kraft and wideout Jayden Reed. They’ll join 2022 draft picks Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, plus veteran running backs AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones.
“And while Love has just one career start on his resume, he’s already earning the trust of his Packers teammates.
“‘I think he definitely has all the intangibles,’ Dillon told SiriusXM Radio (h/t ProFootballTalk’s Josh Alper). ‘He’s earned the trust of the locker room. Guys respect him. Guys wanna play for him. Guys wanna help him as much as they wanna help themselves.’
“After sitting behind Rodgers for most of two seasons, Love is getting his turn to steer the Packers offense. While he may hit a few bumps along the way, Love has an opportunity to entrench himself as Green Bay’s starter this year.”
What is interesting about Knox’s take is that he implies that Green Bay’s surrounding of Love with rookie weapons as opposed to veteran ones as a positive thing. In most reports, the Packers are criticized for not signing any veterans for their new starting quarterback.
Knox also mentions AJ Dillon’s comments about Love. Dillon is just one of several current Packers players that have come out in support of the new starting quarterback this offseason. Kenny Clark became the latest when he stated that he was excited to play with Love and explained why he has earned the respect of his teammates.
Of course, Love needs to prove to the fans and the media what he has already proven to his teammates. If/when he does, the Packers may surprise a great many people this season.
