Brian Gutekunst has had an interesting start to his career as a general manager for the Green Bay Packers. He was part of a head coach hire, imperative in rebuilding an aging roster and dealt with all of the drama surrounding Aaron Rodgers. His career will likely be defined by how Jordan Love pans out, but for right now he is worried about what the Green Bay Packers can do this season. Jordan Love will undoubtedly be the starting quarterback, but who will back him up is an important position battle taking place at training camp. Brian Gutekunst revealed what he is looking for in the man who backs up Jordan Love.
What are the Green Bay Packers looking for?

Jordan Love will be the starting quarterback in 2023, and seemingly 2024. With the contract he signed, it looks like a two-year commitment, at least, from the Green Bay Packers front office. However, if Jordan Love is to get hurt the Packers would like someone that can still give them a chance to win games in what many experts consider one of the weaker divisions in the NFL.
“There’s some good competitions. Each guy has had their moments, which is good. In particular a couple of the new guys learning the offense and being able to make plays within the offense is going to be important. The preseason games, they’re going to get a lot of work. That should probably seperate some things.”
The Packers have three quarterbacks behind Jordan Love currently. Sean Clifford who was drafted from Penn State, Danny Etling who was on the practice squad last year and Alex McGough who won USFL MVP in 2023 are the guys behind Jordan Love. The Green Bay Packers will likely roster one of those guys and sign one to the practice squad. What exactly is Brian Gutekunst looking for in the guy who makes the roster?
“You can try to get a bunch of similar guys that can run the exact offense that Matt wants to run. Sometimes you might have a guy that is more of a runner that can change some things up. For us, it’s more about who can go out there within the offense and make plays and lead the team. I think part of that is being supportive with Jordan and making sure that working relationship is really good cause that’s more important than people think. To me, it’s about being able to take that group of guys ot there, lead them, make plays, score points and make good decisions.”
Brian Gutekunst made it very clear in his press conference who he wants the backup quarterback to be. He wants two main qualities. He wants a leader and he wants a great teammate to Jordan Love. Being a first-year starter can be stressful enough. Jordan Love is being asked to fill the shoes that Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre once wore. The Green Bay Packers are looking for someone who can play and lead if needed, but at the same time be a good support system for their new quarterback.
