It is a new era of Green Bay Packers football. Jordan Love is under center as the Packers’ starting quarterback, taking over for future Hall of Famer and four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. As Peter King said yesterday, Love has the unenvied challenge for following not just one, but two Hall of Fame level quarterbacks. It will be difficult for him to continue that 30-year run of [mostly] Hall of Fame play.
Last week, Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari made headlines when he joked that Aaron Rodgers is “slow as s–t.” On a serious note, he stated how great it was to have an athletic quarterback under center. Love showcased his athleticism during the Packers’ 36-19 preseason victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, as Gilbert Brown pointed out:
“Different style of play. Different style play there, Earl. And he’s going to make those linemen move because his feet are better than Aaron Rodgers’ feet. He’s going to make those linemen work more to block because, as a lineman, you need to know where he is.
“For so many years, they knew where Aaron Rodgers was going to be. This cat here, he’s going to be all over the place.”
Even in the early days of his career, Rodgers was more of a pocket quarterback than a mobile one. While he was able to take off and run the ball for big gains every once in a while, it certainly was not something that he was particularly known for.
That being said, he was slippery in the pocket during his prime years, something that has gone away from his game as he’s gotten older. That is where Jordan Love will be better than Rodgers. Love is athletic and mobile and will be able to extend plays when the pocket breaks down.
Fortunately for him, the pocket did not break down at all on Friday night against the Cincinnati Bengals. But that’s not how it will always be. Teams are bound to break through at some point. And when they do, Love will be able to extend plays with feet.
