NFL: The Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs are both headed into interesting 2023 seasons. The Packers are looking to find out if they have their third franchise quarterback in a row, meanwhile, the Chiefs are looking to win back-to-back Super Bowls with Patrick Mahomes at the helm. Both teams have relied heavily on their quarterback play over the years to be successful.
Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes have been the face of the league for nearly half a decade. That being said, both teams have stars on the defensive side of the ball that can change the game. Today, the Packers were mentioned in a crazy trade idea that would send a force to land of cheese.
The Green Bay Packers Land Star DT Chris Jones From Kansas City Chiefs In Wild Trade Idea (NFL)
Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is set to enter the 2023 season in the final year of his four-year, $80 million contract he signed back in the 2020 offseason, and he’s made it clear how important securing his next deal is with his actions.
The star DT skipped the defending Super Bowl champion’s mandatory minicamp this offseason, and on Saturday, he didn’t report to the Chiefs’ start of training camp. Jones could be fined up to $50,000 by Kansas City for each day that he misses at camp. That may not deter Jones since he and the team are “far apart” on the terms for a new deal, according to ESPN.
Chris Jones himself has put out some pretty cryptic tweets, and it’s tough to blame him. Jone is coming off his best season and routinely applies pressure on some of the best quarterbacks in football. All of these reasons have fans thinking he could be on the trade block.
What Would A Packers-Chiefs Trade For Chris Jones Look Like?
It would take a significant trade package to lure Jones away from the Chiefs. One that the Packers certainly have the draft capital for, but would they be willing to depart with it? If General Manager Brian Gutekunst ponied up, this is what we think the package would have to look like:
Green Bay Packers Receive:
- DT Chris Jones
Kansas City Chiefs Receive:
- 2024 Conditional Second Round pick (becomes a first if Aaron Rodgers plays 65% of snaps)
- 2024 Third Round Pick
- 2025 Second Round Pick
- 2025 Third Round Pick
Even though Jones is at the top of his game, he is now on the wrong side of 30. It is hard to imagine any team giving up multiple first round draft picks for a non-QB position over the age of 30. This trade would set the Packers up with the best defensive front in the NFL.
Kenny Clark is already widely regarded as one of the best DTs in the NFL, paring him with Chris Jones would just be unfair. Another aspect that is important to note is the contract that Jones is seeking. The Packers would have to pony up and commit to a long-term expensive contract for one of the best defensive tackles in the game. Possible? Yes. Extremely difficult to navigate. Also yes. However, if the Packers pulled this off, they would be set at the position for years.

Chris Jones is 29… technically, he’s on the right side of 30.
