Soccer has been steadily growing as a sport in the United States. The amount of new teams that have popped up in the last five to ten years has been astounding. Milwaukee has always been a hub for soccer teams and another one is on the horizon. A new Milwaukee pro soccer team is set to be revealed on Wednesday.

In May, developers laid out a plan for a new soccer stadium in the Iron District. This 8,000 seat soccer stadium also would house a hotel and a massive performance venue. The location is just off of Marquette University’s campus and would be the home for their soccer and lacrosse teams. On October 19th, the new Milwaukee pro soccer team will be revealed. Fans will be able to get a first look at the name, logo and colors of the new team. The first run of merchandise will most likely be available. This is a great move for the city as Wisconsin has always had a love of the sport of soccer.
Many Soccer Teams Already Reside In Wisconsin
The Flamingos, or Mingos for short, are a hugely popular team out of Madison that currently plays in the third tier of American soccer USL League One. In the city of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Wave are the oldest continuously operating professional soccer team in the United States. It is unclear exactly what league the new Milwaukee team will play in. Based on the size of the stadium, it is unlikely that they will jump right to Major League Soccer (MLS). An 8,000 seat stadium would be the smallest by far. It is more likely that they slot into a USL league. This is another aspect of the team that is part of the reveal on Wednesday.
As the sport of soccer grows in America, I expect that MLS will look to expand. Getting a team now and cultivating a fan base will help garner more attention when that expansion time comes. For now, this is another great sporting opportunity for the city of Milwaukee.
