The Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds are currently the only two teams with a winning record in the National League Central. Pittsburgh previously had previously spent some time on top of the division but a 10 game losing streak now has them below .500.
While the Pirates have been slumping the Chicago Cubs have been thriving. They are 8-2 over their last 10 games, 12-7 in the month of June, and are taking a three game winning streak into a series against the last place St. Louis Cardinals that is being played in London.
Prior to the start of the series Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts answered questions from the media. One question he was asked was in regards to the trade deadline status of the current 36-38 Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs are declaring themselves as buyers at the trade deadline. Which means they will likely join the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds as teams looking to improve their odds at winning the National League Central Division.
Tom Ricketts indicated that the Cubs are obviously buyers right now. It’s important to emphasize right now for as quickly as they have picked up steam and started surging back to .500, things can turn on a dime. He acknowledged that in his full response as well.
“Things can come off the rails, but I don’t think they will. I think what we have is a core that can compete for the division and compete for the playoffs and now it’s finding the missing parts to add to it.”
If the Cubs are indeed buyers it should make for a competitive and exciting trade deadline once again.
