The Milwaukee Brewers acquired Carlos Santana during their off day on Thursday, July 27. Despite Carlos Santana being a key veteran piece of the division rival Pittsburgh Pirates, the two sides were able to get a deal done for the rental first baseman as 18 year old prospect Jhonny Severino was given up in exchange.
Trades within the division do not occur with frequency, but in this scenario it makes some sense. Milwaukee needs help at first base and Carlos Santana fits that bill while also being one of the best defenders at the position this season. Pittsburgh has fallen out of playoff contention so trading away an impending free agent and taking a flier on a young prospect at least gets them something in return.
Following the trade Carlos Santana met with the Milwaukee Brewers media. Here are some of his thoughts regarding the exchange.
Carlos Santana speaks out on the trade between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

On whether he was surprised to come to the Brewers and his overall thoughts on the deal.
“I’m a little bit surprised. Most of the time, teams don’t try to trade a player in the same division. But I understand baseball, I understand the business.
They (Brewers) have a lot of good players and I see that team, everybody [is on] the same page and plays to win. They’re fighting to make the playoffs, and I like it.”
Before setting foot in the club house Carlos Santana has indicated that he thinks his new teammates are pumped to have him. He knows Willy Adames, William Contreras, Joel Payamps and cited them as sources regarding this.
Lastly he indicated that he believed his debut with the Brewers would come Saturday in Atalanta.
