Former Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy is not one to hold back his thoughts by means of social media. Recently, he provided his thoughts on MLB commissioner Rob Manfred’s proposed golden at-bat rule.
What is the proposed golden at-bat rule?
Rob Manfred has indicated that a discussion with MLB owners has been had about implementing a golden at-bat. This would allow managers to choose one at-bat in every game to send their best hitter to the plate; even if it wasn’t that guy’s turn to hit. The idea behind this would be to create more drama/suspense in the game while also potentially providing viewers with more excitement in the game by virtue of more runs being scored.
Former Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy sounds off on the proposed golden at-bat rule
On X, Jonathan Lucroy did not hold back his feelings regarding this proposed rule change. He essentially said that if this passes, you might as well legalize performance enhancing drugs so that home run totals increase and fans get what they want. Lucroy also pointed out the business side to the golden at-bat rule and that ultimately it boils down to money.
I got an idea. Let’s just legalize steroids and peptides in the game. Take this baby back to the 90’s with dudes just dropping bombs. That will bring the fans and money they want.
Might as well. https://t.co/MDCHlwNaIB

There currently are no plans to implement the golden at-bat rule
As things currently stand, there are no indications that the golden at-bat rule will be implemented. For now it remains a hypothetical rule change and it is creating quite a stir among the baseball community. Rob Manfred has already modified the way the game is played by adding the three batter minimum, implementing the universal designated hitter, adding a pitch clock, and creating pick off limitations, but the golden at-bat rule may be the most controversial proposal yet.
