Before the 2024 season, the Milwaukee Brewers traded starting pitcher Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles. Burnes had one year remaining on his contract at the time. This offseason, Corbin Burnes is a free agent and he is free to sign with any team this offseason.

There is no question that there are teams who need starting pitching help. One potential team who could sign Burnes is the New York Mets because of the David Stearns connection.

Bleacher Report Writer Kerry Miller Thinks That Former Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher Corbin Burnes Could Sign With the Chicago Cubs This Offseason

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell chats with Germantown head coach Matt Stuve at halftime of the game between Whitefish Bay and Appleton East in the Kettle Moraine Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, November 29, 2024, at Kettle Moraine High School in Wales, Wisconsin.

A season ago, the Chicago Cubs missed the playoffs and the Milwaukee Brewers won the National League Central for the second consecutive season. Chicago’s manager is Craig Counsell and he was in his first year with the ball club. The connection with him and former Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes makes sense.

Bleacher Report writer Kerry Miller thinks that the Cubs have the third-best chance to sign Burnes this offseason. Miller wrote:

“How about one more big note? If (the Detroit Tigers) is considered one of the top landing spots for Alex Bregman in part because of his previous time with their current manager, don’t the Cubs need to be considered a strong contender for Burnes, who spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with their current manager, Craig Counsell? Most of the guesses at where Burnes will land haven’t even mentioned the Cubs among their 7-10 candidates, but it’s a great fit, no?

Because of the caliber of the top three pitchers already in their rotation, maybe their level of desperation to sign Burnes won’t come anywhere close to matching that of the other teams in our top five. They absolutely could win this bidding war, though.”

The Cubs are looking to make the playoffs in 2025. This would be a great start for Chicago to try and reclaim the National League Central from the Milwaukee Brewers.

New York Mets and Boston Red Sox Top Favorites To Sign Him

The New York Mets could no doubt be signing Corbin Burnes this offseason, and the Boston Red Sox also need some help in the rotation. If Boston wants to make it to the playoffs next season, they will need more starting pitching.

As for the Mets, they need as many arms as possible in the rotation to keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Atlanta Braves, and the San Diego Padres in the National League. New York has a lot of money they can spend because of owner Steve Cohen.
