Ever since Doc Rivers’ debut as the Milwaukee Bucks head coach, the team has only won one game while losing four to different Western Conference teams. This led Pat Connaughton to speak up on the team’s mentality on winning recently.
The Bucks’s last loss came at the hands of the Phoenix Suns. In that contest, the trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal combined for 85 points to send Milwaukee on its fourth defeat in five games. Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo was locked in during that game by dropping 34 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists in 38 minutes on the court.
Before that game against the Suns, the Bucks fell to the Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Utah Jazz. The former saw Rivers’s coaching debut end with a loss, while Milwaukee’s match against the Trail Blazers spoiled Lillard’s return to Portland.
All of these losses have surely taken their effect on the Bucks. This has led Connaughton to speak about the team’s mentality and how it has been affected by these games.
Pat Connaughton Gets Real About the Milwaukee Bucks’ Mentality on Winning
Connaughton, who played point guard in place of an injured Lillard, spoke about how the Bucks are not interested in getting moral victories. In an article written by Eric Nehm for The Athletic:
“We have guys that, when they go out there, they want to put their best foot forward, they want to win, and they’ll do it for an entire 48 minutes,” Connaughton said. “And I think that’s part of the DNA, part of the culture that we have.”
“And we don’t take moral victories, but that’s the standard that our best players set. The standard Giannis has set, Khris has set, Dame, Brook, you know, Jrue Holiday when he was here, Bobby. The standard is competing. Competing isn’t an option; competing is what we do, and we do it as consistently as we possibly can. day in and day out,” Connaughton added.
With the Bucks set to meet the Minnesota Timberwolves soon, all eyes will be on the team to see whether they can break their losing streak and add another game to it. In any case, expect Connaughton and his teammates to work hard to achieve the former.
