Former NBA star Sam Cassell has been an assistant coach in the league for as long as anyone can remember. For Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley, though, it’s about time a team hires him as a head coach.
Drafted by the Houston Rockets as the 24th overall pick in the 1993 Draft, Cassell established himself as a clutch player during critical moments in close games. Ultimately, his time with his first team resulted in a pair of rings in 1994 and 1995. He would later go on to play for various teams in the NBA, such as the Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Later in his career, Cassell joined the Boston Celtics for the 2008-09 season. His presence off the bench proved to be instrumental, especially against the NBA Finals showdown against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009. This victory marked Cassell’s third and final championship as a player.
After retiring with averages of 15.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists, Cassell transitioned to coaching, joining the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach in 2009. He is currently employed by the Celtics in the same role for this season.

As it stands, Cassell has been linked to the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching vacancy for some time now. While he was once a strong candidate for that job after former head coach Darvin Ham was let go, UConn’s Dan Hurley is shaping up to the frontrunner.

It remains to be seen whether Cassell gets a shot to coach LeBron James and the Lakers next season or not. For Beverley, though, it’s only a matter of time before the former Bucks guard gets his chance to shine in a head coaching gig for an NBA team.
