Even though it has been less than a year, it feels like forever since Mike Budenholzer was at the helm of the Milwaukee Bucks. The coach who led the Bucks to their first NBA Championship in 50 years was fired after two disappointing playoff exits in a row. Budenholzer ended his tenure with Milwaukee with a .693 winning percentage, the highest in Bucks history.
After Coach Bud was fired, the front office did an extensive search and interview process to find their next head coach. Having Giannis Antetokounmpo and a core of Championship caliber players meant that they needed to find someone who could lead them back to the Finals as soon as possible.
The coach they landed on, with some prodding from Giannis and other players, was former Toronto Raptors assistant coach Adrian Griffin. Unfortunately, despite leading Milwaukee to a 30-13 record through 43 games, Griffin was dismissed as well.
After a three-game stint with Joe Prunty as the interim head coach (again), Doc Rivers was hired to take over. With Milwaukee currently third in the East, another team that has fired its coach midseason is already planning on who will take over after the season is over. And it sounds like Budenholzer might be a frontrunner.
Former Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Mike Budenholzer Is a Rumored Frontrunner for the Brooklyn Nets Job
According to Mark Stein:
“Mike Budenholzer’s name immediately circulated as a potential Nets candidate in the wake of Vaughn’s dismissal, which was no surprise given Marks’ and Budenholzer’s shared ties to San Antonio. But, Bud figures to be a top contender for multiple offseason job openings. He surely has an incentive to see how the coaching market develops.”
The Nets are currently 21-35 and three games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the final spot in the Eastern Conference play-in. Jacques Vaughn, their former head coach, was fired during the NBA All-Star break. Kevin Ollie, a former Bucks guard, and the head coach who won a NCAA Championship with UCONN in 2014, is taking over as interim head coach.
Budenholzer, who is taking the year off from coaching, is going to have options next year. Surely with a Championship on his resume, he will be a leading contender for multiple jobs.
