There are a handful of former Milwaukee Bucks players that do not need any introduction to fans due to how well-known they are for both their achievements as a player and how present they have been since their playing days ended. One of these is current Bucks television broadcaster Marques Johnson, who also happens to be one of the nine players whose number has been retired by the organization.
Indeed, Johnson was, and remains, a pillar of the Milwaukee organization. And now he finally may get another long overdue honor: induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Milwaukee Bucks Legend Marques Johnson Is a Finalist for the Basketball Hall of Fame

On Friday afternoon, Valentine’s Day, it was announced that Johnson is one of the 10 former WNBA and NBA players that have been named as finalists for the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.

The full list of finalists includes several big-name players from various eras of the NBA and WNBA:
- Carmelo Anthony
- Sylvia Fowles
- Maya Moore
- Dwight Howard
- Sue Bird
- Jennifer Azzi
- Buck Williams
- Molly Bolin
- Marques Johnson
- Dušan Ivković
Additionally, three coaches have been named as finalists, including one current head coach of Milwaukee’s rival to the south:
- Billy Donovan
- Mark Few
- Jerry Welsh
Danny Crawford, Micky Arison, Tal Brody, and the 2008 US Olympic Men’s Gold Medal Winning Team are also finalists.
In 11 NBA seasons, Johnson averaged 20.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. His numbers look even better when one looks only at his seven seasons with Bucks: 21.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
He also played for the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors.
Johnson missed two full seasons, 1987-88 and 1988-89, due to injury.
Should he be honored with induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he would be the 17th former Bucks player to receive such recognition. The others are:
- Guy Rodgers
- Bob Dandridge
- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
- Oscar Robertson
- Alex English
- Sidney Moncrief
- Bob Lanier
- Dave Cowens
