It’s no secret that the Milwaukee Bucks brought in Doc Rivers with a championship in mind. This was the motivation for the front office when they pulled the trigger on a blockbuster trade for Damian Lillard this summer, and it was also one of, if not the most significant motivation they had when they fired Adrian Griffin.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is not shying away from all the championship talk. In fact, the Bucks talisman is confident that Rivers has what it takes to lead this squad to another title.
Milwaukee Bucks Star Giannis Antetokounmpo Lauds Doc Rivers’ Resume
According to Antetokounmpo, the most important thing Rivers brings to the table is all the experience the one-time NBA champion coach has under his belt. Giannis believes that it is this experience that the Bucks will rely on now that they have a new man sitting at the helm:
“We know that he’s played in tough games,” Antetokounmpo said, via Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “We know that he’s played in two NBA Finals. Like, he’s been there before. We’ve been there one time. We want to go there again. And, sometimes, having people with experience next to you, it helps you.
“When it’s tough, when you face challenges, when things don’t go your way, having somebody that can be like, ‘Hey, I’ve been here before. This is what we’re going to do. This how we’re going to attack it. This is how we gotta stay together. Don’t worry about the expectation. We’ve gotta do this as a team.’ Somebody that can give you that guide, that lead, it’s always great to have him in your locker room. So, I’m excited that he understands that we’re trying to win a championship. I think everybody in this locker room understands that.”
Clearly, Adrian Griffin did not have those qualities. To his credit, Coach Griff did a relatively good job during his time as head coach. However, as Giannis emphasized, having gone through the highest of highs has equipped Rivers with the invaluable experience that Griffin never had.
Then again, you can’t ignore the fact that it has been 16 years since Rivers won his single career championship as a head coach. It has been way too long. Giannis and Co. are hoping, however, that Rivers breaks his curse now that he’s in Milwaukee.
