The Milwaukee Brewers are the only team in Major League Baseball to not have a four-game losing streak, and they were dead set on making sure that didn’t happen on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The NL Central champions might’ve had the comeback of the year in their thrilling 10-9 victory against the Diamondbacks, avoiding a sweep.
Milwaukee Brewers clap back against Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Milwaukee Brewers struggled early on, allowing a seven-run inning by Arizona against Milwaukee’s starter Franke Montas, However, they weren’t going to let that slide, they needed to score runs.
Milwaukee was able to score in their half of the third with Blake Perkins getting the action going with an RBI single. Sal Frelick would then hit an RBI double in the fourth and Joey Ortiz’s sac-fly would cut the deficit to 8-3. Jackson Chourio kept the scoring going in the sixth inning with an RBI single, and consecutive RBI doubles from Rhys Hoskins and Willy Adames would pull them within 8-6 in the seventh inning.
Heading into the eighth, the Brewers were down by three with two outs and nobody on as Arizona’s reliever Joe Mantiply came to the mound. Mantiply walked Chourio, and Perkins responded with a single, who then scored on a Garrett Mitchell RBI.
Rhys Hoskins was able to tie it up with a two-run single, Willy Adames smashed a double out to the wall in left and Jake Bauers, who was pinch-hitting for Gary Sanchez, came in clutch once again, giving them the lead with an infield hit.
A Rough Start for Frankie Montas
From the jump, Milwaukee was behind and that can be contributed to a Ketel Marte homer to right field in the first inning to put Arizona up 1-0. Then in the third, Geraldo Perdomo sent a triple to right and scored on a Brice Turang throwing error that went past his intended target of Joey Ortiz and into the camera well.
Pavin Smith hit a single, and would later score after a Marte walk, Joc Pederson was able to reach on a catcher’s interference, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr scored on a defensive blip by the Brewers. The scoring wasn’t over, however. Jake McCarthy got a two-run single into right, followed by a Josh Bell two-run homer to bring their lead to 7-0. Eugenio Suarez would follow that up with a solo shot to bring theit lead to 8-0 before Montas was pulled after a 41-pitch inning.
Montas finished his day charged with eight runs (seven earned), six hits, two walks, and four strike outs in 2 2/3 innings.
The Brewers have an off-day on Monday before taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates one last time this season at PNC Park starting on Tuesday for a three-game series.
