The Milwaukee Brewers will own the 17th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. The first round of the MLB Draft will take place on July 14th in Forth Worth, Texas. Milwaukee is looking to improve the farm system.
General manager Matt Arnold is looking for the best player available when they have the 17th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Milwaukee a season ago finished with a 92-70 record and were the National League Central division champions.
This season, they are in first place again in the division with a 28-21 record. The Brewers are looking to win the division for the second consecutive season. Milwaukee has had help within the organization internally to get to this point. In last year’s MLB Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers selected third baseman Brock Wilken with the 18th overall pick. He is now the fifth-ranked prospect in Milwaukee’s organization.
Milwaukee Brewers Being Linked To Drafting North Carolina Tar Heels Outfielder Vance Honeycutt
Milwaukee taking another quality college baseball hitter in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft would not be a surprise. Outfielder Vance Honeycutt has played in 52 games so far this season for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He has a .319 batting average with 22 home runs and 57 RBIs, along with 28 stolen bases and three caught stealing attempts.
Honeycutt has a .418 on-base percentage, a .700 slugging percentage, and a 1.118 OPS. It will be interesting to see if the Milwaukee Brewers were to select him if available when the 17th pick rolls around.
Jim Callis of MLB.com wrote about the Brewers selecting Honeycutt by saying:
“Honeycutt has the best tools in the college class but also alarming strikeout rates and in-zone swing-and-miss percentages, so he both enthralls and frightens clubs at the same time. Some teams think he won’t last this long, while others believe he could drop into the late 20s.”
Vance Honeycutt is one of those prospects that could very well be a hit-or-miss prodigy. The Milwaukee Brewers currently have a loaded outfield. However, they are going to need a Christian Yelich replacement at some point. Yelich is 32 years old and has proven time and time again that he can’t stay healthy on the field.
However, when healthy, Yelich is one of the best players in the Milwaukee Brewers lineup. Scouts could be concerned about Honeycutt’s strikeout rates, but baseball these days appears to be about the long ball anyway.
