On Saturday, the Milwaukee Brewers dropped their second game of the season against the New York Yankees by the score of 20-9. It was a game that got away from them early as Yankees sluggers hit three home runs on Nestor Cortes‘ first three pitches of the game. Aaron Judge, the reigning American League MVP, blasted three home runs and drove in eight runs on the day.
During and after the game, a slight bat modification that New York has implemented this year went viral, with many fans believing that they should be illegal.
The New York Yankees Are Using Modified Bats Against the Milwaukee Brewers

During the Yankees broadcast, Michael Kay pointed out and explained New York’s new “torpedo bats,” which add more wood to the label of the bat, where hitters make contact more often. “The Yankee front office, the analytics department, did a study on Anthony Volpe and every single ball, it seemed like, he hit on the label,” Michael Kay said. “He didn’t hit any on the barrel. So they had bats made up where they moved a lot of the wood into the label so the harder part of the bat will actually strike the ball.”
Apparently, the modifications are legal. It’s just that New York has been the only team to use them thus far this year.
Well, that will not be the case for long.
Milwaukee Brewers Slugger Rhys Hoskins Has Ordered Some Torpedo Bats

Mark Hoffman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
According to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins has ordered himself a set of the “torpedo bats” used by the Yankees.
Rhys Hoskins is one of a few Brewers players who already has an order in for some “torpedo barrel” bats that became the big storyline in yesterday’s game.
“I mean, we’re always looking for ways to make the game easier,” Hoskins said. “Let’s try it. There’s no harm in that.”

Hoskins slugged 26 home runs last year in his first year with Milwaukee, which was also his first season following his recovery from a torn ACL in 2023 Spring Training.
If he finds the same results as the Yankees using the bat, he could be in for a very big year for the Brewers.
