The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their Spring Training game against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday by the score of 5-4. Despite the loss, Brewers fans were excited by Caleb Durbin and Vinny Capra opening the game with back-to-back solo home runs. Both infield prospects are making a significant case for being a part of the Opening Day roster, especially Capra (who is out of minor league options) and his four Spring Training home runs.
However, Milwaukee may be dealing with a loss more serious than dropping an exhibition game. Aaron Ashby, who missed all of 2023 and most of 2024 as he recovered from a labrum injury, had to pulled after one inning of work. He did not allow any runs or hits, but did walk two batters.
Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Hopes Aaron Ashby Will Not Be Out Long

After the game, manager Pat Murphy revealed that Ashby suffered an oblique injury. The good news is that it is not another arm or shoulder injury that could have sidelined him for another year. However, oblique injuries are notoriously tricky and can take weeks to heal.
Murphy does not think that will be the case, though:
Pat Murphy says it’s an oblique strain for Aaron Ashby.
Early sense is it won’t be a months-long absence, but that won’t be confirmed until imaging tomorrow.

As noted in the post above, Ashby is going to have imagining done on the injury to determine its severity and how much time will have to miss (if any).
As mentioned, Ashby returned last season after an absence that lasted over a year due to a labrum injury. When he finally took the mound, he showed Milwaukee fans why the Brewers deemed him worthy of a five-year $20 million contract.
In 14 games (two starts), he was 1-2 with a 2.86 ERA and 1.06 WHIP.
Per Spotrac, Ashby is being paid $3.45 million this season. He has a scheduled salary of $5.7 million in 2026 and $7.7 million in 2027.
Following the 2027 season, Milwaukee can pick up a club option on Ashby worth $9 million in 2028. They have another one in 2029 worth $13 million.
