The Milwaukee Brewers dropped the second game of their four-game series against the Chicago Cubs by the score of 6-3. Unfortunately, the Crew was unable to capitalize on a stellar outing from starting pitcher Freddy Peralta. Milwaukee’s ace pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits, one run, and two walks while striking out 11 Cubs hitters.
Peralta’s lone blemish was a solo home run to Chicago first baseman Michael Busch in the third inning. That lone run almost proved to be enough for the Cubs, whose starter, Ben Brown, threw seven no-hit innings. Fortunately for Milwaukee, Sal Frelick broke up the no-hitter in the eighth, and Willy Adames tied the game at one with a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Unfortunately for Milwaukee, Adames was thrown out at second on the play.
Milwaukee Brewers Closer Trevor Megill Suffered an Elbow Injury in the 10th
With the score tied one-to-one, the Cubs had the “ghost runner” on second in the top of the 10th. The first Chicago hitter, Mike Tauchman, hit a line drive off of Trevor Megill’s elbow. The pain was so intense, Megill could not field the ball. Catcher William Contreras could not retrieve the ball either, as he to cover home plate.
As a result, the Cubs’ runner scored giving them a 2-1 lead. The Brewers’ immediately removed Megill from the game and took him to the clubhouse for x-rays. Milwaukee gave up four more runs in the frame and entered the bottom of the inning trailing 6-1.
The Brewers were able to scratch two more runs across, but it was not enough.
Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Gives an Update on Trevor Megill’s Injury
After the game, reporters asked Murphy how Megill was doing. He responded, “It’s not fractured.”
They then asked if he the extent of the injury. Murphy replied, “Yeah, I mean, he got drilled pretty hard. He’s going to be good and sore for while.”
Milwaukee, obviously, has not made a decision in regards to a possible IL stint for Megill, but it will not be surprising if it happens. Megill, of course, is filling in as the closer because All-Star Devin Williams has yet to appear in a game this year due to stress fractures in his back.
Injuries have hit Brewers’ pitchers hard this year. Four different starting pitchers are currently on IL: Wade Miley (out for the year), DL Hall, Joe Ross, and Jakob Junis. Megill himself was on IL earlier this year after he suffered a concussion (he hit his head after fainting during a bout with food poisoning).
