The Milwaukee Brewers are 67-52 and in first place in the National League Central Division. Unfortunately, they have now lost three games in a row following their 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night. Fortunately, the St. Louis Cardinals have also lost three games in a row and their lead in the division remains at 7.5 games.
As has been the case all season long, the Brewers’ bats have gone quiet over their last four games. What is so frustrating for fans is that the offense has the capability to be dynamic. Prior to their losing streak, Milwaukee had won five games in a row. This included a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves that saw the Brewers score 34 runs.
The inconsistency on offense is to be expected for such a young roster. However, the Brewers also expect to maintain their division lead and be a factor in the Playoffs. There are serious questions regarding how far this team can go with the players they currently have.
The Milwaukee Brewers Are Down Their Best Hitter in Christian Yelich
Amazingly for Milwaukee, they have been able to maintain their lead in the National League Central Division without their best hitter, Christian Yelich. The three-time All-Star was placed on the injured list with a back injury that will eventually require surgery. However, he is trying to rehab it for now in hopes that he can come back and help the Brewers down the stretch.
At the time of his injury, Yelich was hitting .315/.406/.504 with 11 home runs and 42 RBI. He also had 21 stolen bases.
This season was Yelich’s best year since 2019 and he was the National League’s highest vote-getter among outfielders for the All-Star Game, making him a starter in the Midsummer Classic for the first time in his career.
Without Yelich in the lineup, the Brewers have been able to put up big numbers at times but have also gone through stretches where scoring runs is difficult. To remedy this, they could look to a recently cast aside Dodgers player to boost their lineup.
Milwaukee Brewers Encouraged to Sign Former Los Angeles Dodgers Infielder/Outfield Amed Rosario
On July 29, the Dodgers traded a minor league player to the Tampa Bay Rays for infielder/outfielder Amed Rosario. On Monday, the designated Rosario for assignment to make room for Mookie Betts, who was activated from the injured list.
The decision to DFA Rosario was a head-scratcher as he is hitting .305/.331/.415 with two home runs and 28 RBI on the season.
Obviously, Rosario is no power hitter; but he is a good at making contact (he has struck out only 50 times in 81 games). That being said, he does not walk often (eight times all year). As one can see, though, he still gets on base often enough.
Defensively, Rosario has played second base, third base, short stop, and right field in 2024. He also has played left field and center field in the past.
Pat Murphy could put him just about anywhere.
