On Thursday March 16, Luke Voit had the ability to opt out of his Minor League contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. He’s said on numerous occasions that he likes the fit here and would love to stay. It’s now two days later, March 18, and he has not been added to the 40-man roster. In a last ditch effort to remain with the Brewers, Voit has voluntarily pushed his opt out date back one week.
Luke Voit’s new opt out date is now Friday March 24. That is six days prior to opening day.
Milwaukee Brewers Luke Voit has voluntarily pushed his opt out date back by one week in hopes that the team will add him to the 40-man roster.
Luke Voit told us he’s agreed to push his opt-out to Friday. He likes the fit with the Brewers and has been told they like him. But the team is trying to maintain maximum 40-man roster flexibility.

Brewers beat reporter Adam McCalvy indicates that one hurdle is that the team is desiring to maintain maximum 40-man roster flexibility. This could be hinting at a variety of different considerations such as Luke Voit not wanting to be optioned to the minor leagues despite having MiLB options remaining. It could also be referencing the fact that he is strictly a designated hitter and first baseman, in which both of those positions are currently occupied.
If the Brewers and Luke Voit are unable to come to terms and make this work by next Friday, he may elect to move on to a different organization. He has indicated that other teams are interested in signing him, but again re-iterated that he likes Milwaukee.
Voit said he has other teams interested in signing him, but likes the fit in Milwaukee. That’s why he’s stayed past the initial opt-out date and agreed for the Brewers to push the deadline back. https://t.co/dJmTM9xeV4

Voit, who is healthy this year, has had a monster spring. In 28 at-bats, he has collected 10 hits with four of them going for extra bases. His slash line is .357/.379/.643. He could be a very beneficial piece to the puzzle for a Brewers offense that struggled to consistently put up runs last season.
