Entering today’s contest, the Milwaukee Brewers were looking to bounce back after a rather disappointing loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night. With Aaron Civale on the mound, expectations weren’t too high as Civale’s tenure as a Brewer so far has been a bit bumpy.
The Miami Marlins made a huge trade announcement prior to Saturday’s game, announcing they had traded Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees; In response to that, the Marlins called up Max Meyer, a player who had posted a 2.12 ERA after three starts in April.
Milwaukee also announced that they were acquiring pitcher Nick Mears in a trade with the Colorado Rockies ahead of Saturday’s contest.
The Brewers are still without Christian Yelich, and the offense has been struggling since after the all-star break. In his absence, Garrett Mitchell has been receiving more play time alongside Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins in the outfield. However, it wouldn’t be enough as the Brewers would lose their second straight to the Marlins on Saturday, 7-3.
Milwaukee Brewers lose second straight to Miami Marlins, no big offense moments.
The Miami Marlins struck early again thanks to Jesus Sanchez and his RBI double in the top of the second, and was quickly followed by a Jonah Bride RBI single that got Sanchez home.
The Brewers responded in the bottom of the fourth when Rhys Hoskins smashed a three-run blast deep into left center, giving the crew the lead, 3-2. From there, the bats would go quiet for Milwaukee, as they wouldn’t hold a lead much longer against Miami.
Nick Fortes tied up the game in the top of the seventh at 3-3 with a single. Once the Brewers took Jared Koenig out, Elvis Peguero was on the mound and quickly gave up another run, allowing Bryan De La Cruz to hit a go-ahead single to bring Miami’s lead to four.
On his third pitch, Josh Bell came to the plate swinging, demolishing a three-run homer into deep center field and the Brewers just couldn’t seem to get their bats going for the remainder of the game.
Brewers announce roster moves, new additions.
The injury plague continues to hit the Brewers hard as they announced prior to Saturday’s game that one of their more dependable relievers in Bryan Hudson would be heading to the 15-day IL with an oblique strain. This comes just a day after the crew also announced that LHP Rob Zastryzny was placed on the 15-day with left elbow tendinitis. As a result of Zastryzny and Hudson going on the injured list, both RHP Janson Junk and Tyler Jay were called up and activated.
Nick Mears joins the crew while they send pitchers Bradley Blalock and Yujanjer Herrera to Colorado. Mears has a 1.80 ERA in his last 12 games, but his career 4.93 ERA isn’t really something worth boasting about. Hopefully this isn’t the last trade the Brewers make prior to the deadline on Tuesday, as pitching is a crucial need at this point. But, Mears can offer some positives to a pitching staff that seems to be going down like flies.
What’s Next for Milwaukee…
The Brewers look to hopefully avoid a sweep against the Marlins, and will honor Ryan Braun with his spot on the Walk of Fame on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10P.M. CST.
