The Milwaukee Brewers will begin their 2025 MLB season in the Bronx as they take on the New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon. Months ago, it was announced that one-time All-Star Freddy Peralta will, once again, be the team’s starting pitcher for their first game of the season. Fortunately for Milwaukee, Peralta got through Spring Training without suffering any injuries.
The same cannot be said, however, for many of the Brewers starting pitchers.
Per Brewers insider Adam McCalvy, just three starting pitchers will make the Opening Day roster for Milwaukee: Peralta, Nestor Cortes, and Aaron Civale.
The Milwaukee Brewers Are Keeping 4 Long Relievers on the Roster to Start the 2025 MLB Season

Starting pitchers DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, and Tobias Myers all suffered injuries at some point during Spring Training. Hall will not be back for months as he sustained a lat strain. Ashby and Myers are both down with oblique strains, but should be able to rejoin the Brewers before the end of April.
That being said, both will need rehab assignments in order to build up their stamina to start games.
Similarly, Brandon Woodruff, who is working his way back from shoulder surgery that cost him his entire 2024 campaign, will not be ready to start the season.
As a result, Milwaukee has decided to keep four long relievers/spot starters on their roster: Tyler Alexander, Chad Patrick, Elvin Rodriguez, and Connor Thomas.
Thomas, a rule five pick that Milwaukee used to steal him away from the St. Louis Cardinals, must remain on the roster all year long lest he be returned to their division rivals.
The most notable name listed above is Patrick’s. He was the Brewers’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season as he went 14-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 26 games (24 starts) for the Nashville Sounds.
Milwaukee Brewers LHP Jose Quintana Has Accepted an Assignment to Triple-A Nashville

One name notably missing from the list of starting pitchers that have made the Opening Day roster is that of free agent signee Jose Quintana. Because he signed so late in spring, Quintana was not able to get as much work in and, therefore, does not yet have the stamina needed to pitch five or more innings in a Major League game.
McCalvy has reported that Quintana has accepted an assignment to Triple-A Nashville where he can continue his ramp up.
After arriving in Brewers camp, Quintana appeared in two games. In five innings pitched, he had a 3.60 ERA and 0.80 WHIP.
It is not yet known how long Milwaukee’s biggest free agent signing of the offseason will be down in Nashville. That being said, it is hard to see him needing more than a couple of starts in order to get to where he needs to be.
