Earlier today, it was reported that the Milwaukee Brewers had come to an agreement on a one-year contract with veteran left-handed starting pitcher Jose Quintana. Known as a “Brewers killer,” Quintana will now join the team that he often dominated, especially during his days with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Last season, which he spent with the New York Mets, the long-time veteran went 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA. He also pitched six shutout innings against Milwaukee in Game Three of the Brewers’ Wild Card Round loss to the Mets.
When news of the signing broke, many Brewers fans believed that it was a quick deal struck in response to the injury to Thomas Pannone. However, that was not the case.
The Milwaukee Brewers and Jose Quintana Had Been in Talks for a Long Time

In a recent video released on social media, MLB insiders revealed that the deal struck between the Brewers and Quintana on Monday was the result of very long negotiations:

“The Brewers know exactly what they are getting here. And Quintana, when he was with the Chicago Cubs, the Cubs would always have Quintana lined up to face the Brewers because he owned them that much. And it was the same way when he was with the Pirates. He would always do well against the Brewers there.
“And even last year, when the Mets faced the Brewers in an elimination game in Milwaukee, Quintana pitched six shutout innings.
“He’s a very effective veteran pitcher. He’s crafty, a great locker room leader, and he provides depth to that rotation.
“The signing made all of the sense in the world. It was a pretty difficult negotiation overall. The sides were pretty far apart, even in recent days, in previous weeks, because this has been something that they’ve discussed for quite a while now. And they finally ended up reaching some head way here recently.”
Prior to the signing, Spotrac had Quintana’s market value at $8.3 million per season. Milwaukee was able to get him signed for $4.5 million.
