The Milwaukee Brewers had three players named as award finalists for 2024 Rawling’s Gold Gloves. Infielder Brice Turang and outfielders Blake Perkins plus Sal Frelick all were one of three finalists at their respective positions. One player who got snubbed out of being in contention for a Gold Glove was third baseman Joey Ortiz.
Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz was snubbed from being a finalist for a 2024 Rawling’s Gold Glove award
Entering Spring Training this year Joey Ortiz had very little game experience at third base; however that is where the Brewers had an opening in their lineup. Ortiz ended up earning the position and was the primary third baseman throughout the season in which he flashed some serious leather. The rookie finished the 2024 season with 11 outs above average (tied for most in MLB with Mattt Chapman) and tied for fourth in defensive runs saved with seven.
Who are the 2024 Rawling’s Gold Glove finalists at third base?
This year St. Louis Cardinals Nolan Arenado, San Francisco Giants’ Matt Chapman, and Colorado Rockies’ Ryan McMahon are the three finalists for a Gold Glove award as third baseman. Arenado won the award each of his first 10 seasons in the big leagues but didn’t win last year as Ke’Bryan Hayes edged him out. Chapman has won a gold glove four times throughout his career and McMahon is looking for his first.
When looking at advanced metrics Ortiz finished higher than Arenado in outs above average and defensive runs saved. Additionally, Ortiz committed one more error than Arenado did last season, but Ortiz also had the upper hand in double plays (23 compared to 21).
Ortiz certainly deserved a spot as a finalist over Arenado, but unfortunately Arenado’s pedigree may have allowed him to be named a finalist instead.
