The Milwaukee Brewers have given Jackson Chourio lots of opportunities over their first 47 games of the season. He has appeared in 43 games for the Brew Crew, his offensive performance has fluctuated, and now most recently a ninth inning defense blunder against the Miami Marlins ended up being a crucial play in a game that Milwaukee went on to lose.
Defense was one area of concern that surfaced during Spring Training regarding Jackson Chourio.

During Spring Training Brewers coach Quintin Berry had a revealing quote indicating that Jackson Chourio sometimes got bored in the outfield. Berry said, “When you come up as a shortstop you’re always in the action. Being able to hone in his attention and stay engaged all the time is the battle for him.” Throughout nearly two months of big league action there were no defensive lapses from Chourio. That changed against the Miami Marlins.
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio had a defensive blunder on a potential game-ending fly ball against the Miami Marlins.

With a runner in scoring position, two outs in the ninth inning, and a one run lead Brewers reliever Trevor Megill got a pop up to shallow right field. Jackson Chourio initially charged inward but appeared to get caught in between whether or not to make a running or diving stab at the baseball and instead stopped running and fielded the ball on a hop as the game tying run crossed home plate. This was the potential game ending out and it had a 76% catch odds. Miami ended up winning on a walk-off base hit in the 10th inning from Josh Bell after Milwaukee failed to score during the top of the 10th.

Brewers fans react to Jackson Chourio’s ninth inning defensive blunder.

*didn’t even try to make a play on the ball

Could’ve had it. I’m sitting right there. Not a for sure catch but he could’ve got it

Jackson pulled up. Would rather have lost on an inside the park homer if he dives and misses than see him not even try for the last out.

Y’all can whine however much you want, but I see a 20 year old who doesn’t want this ball to roll to the wall and be the reason the team loses so he plays it safe.
I see 0 issue with this at all. https://t.co/V90H6En33R

Still don’t know what to make of this play… honestly don’t think it’s a lack of effort. Just inexperienced and wasn’t focused enough on the situation. Sometimes you get caught in between on balls like this & have instant regret, but he’ll learn. Disappointing. https://t.co/0fdMxtMG4t
