Former Milwaukee Brewers infielder Jace Peterson made the Arizona Diamondbacks World Series roster. He was acquired by the snakes via trade from the Oakland Athletics this summer, but has struggled since arriving with his new team. Despite his difficulties at the plate he did receive a pinch hit at-bat during Saturday night’s 9-1 blowout World Series game against the Texas Rangers and it came with some controversy.
Texas Rangers vs Arizona Diamondbacks 2023 World Series: Former Milwaukee Brewers infielder Jace Peterson receives one controversial at-bat.
With the game out of reach in the ninth inning Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo brought in Jace Peterson to pinch hit for Tommy Pham. At the time Tommy Pham as 4-4 with two doubles and could have had a shot at history for no player has ever gone 5-5 in a World Series game. Rather Jace Peterson took his spot and ended up grounding out on a fielder’s choice on the sixth pitch of the at-bat. He would go on to score a run later on in the inning.
Following the game social media was up in arms about Tommy Pham being denied a chance at post-season history. However Tommy Pham did respond and actually admitted that giving Jace Peterson an at-bat was his idea. Here is what he said on social media:
“I asked Torey (Luvullo) can Jace (Peterson) hit for me. I wanted my dawg to get his first World Series at-bat. Stop this narrative please.”
This decision and response by Tommy Pham is pretty cool to see. He publicly announced that he put his teammate before him and gave up a chance at World Series history in the process. By doing this he is also highlighting how important the World Series is to everyone that has worked hard to get to that spot. Now Jace Peterson will have a memory of a World Series at-bat that will stick with him throughout his lifetime.
