The Milwaukee Brewers announced a series of roster moves on Saturday prior to their game against the Cincinnati Reds. Receiving big league promotions are outfielder Blake Perkins and 1B/DH Jon Singleton. These moves were made in correspondence to Tyrone Taylor and Darin Ruf going on the injured list.
Two players who previously had been talked about in regards to major league promotions are Sal Frelick and Keston Hiura. Frelick is an outfielder and Hiura a 1B/DH, so why didn’t either one of these two receive a call up instead? Unfortunately both are recovering from injuries.
Milwaukee Brewers Sal Frelick is recovering from thumb surgery and Keston Hiura has a knee injury.
Sal Frelick was injured on the same day in April as Garrett Mitchell. Next week will mark six weeks out from his thumb surgery. He originally was given a 6-8 week timeline estimate. Brewers farm director Tom Flanagan provided an update last week indicating that Frelick was on track. According to Curt Hogg Frelick is currently hitting off of soft tees and is looking at returning to game action around the third week of June.
As for Keston Hiura, he sustained a PCL injury to his knee in mid-May. The Brewers announced that it will be late June before he is playing baseball again. His injury was unfortunate because he was slashing .331/.396/.678/1.074 with 12 home runs, 33 runs batted in, and just a 24.6% strikeout rate.
Hopefully both players are able to make full and speedy recoveries. Once healthy it’s possible that one or both receive promotions to the Brewers at some point this season.
