Injuries continue to plague the Milwaukee Brewers. Prior to today’s game against the Cincinnati Reds the organization announced that two position players were being placed on the injured list. As a result they have recalled an outfielder from Triple-A and selected the contract of a slugging left-handed first basemen.
Milwaukee Brewers roster news: Tyrone Taylor and Darin Ruf placed on the IL, Blake Perkins and Jon Singleton brought up from Triple-A.
Prior to Friday night’s series opener against the Reds, Milwaukee scratched Tyrone Taylor from the lineup due to his elbow flaring up again. He missed all of spring training and the month of April due to this. His month of May was quite rough as he had just a .167 batting average and .187 on base percentage. Tyrone Taylor is out of minor league options, so this move to the IL may prolong a future designation for assignment.
Darin Ruf was injured during the game on Friday night. He was tracking down a foul ball and hit his knee on the tarp. There was visible blood soaking through his pant leg but he did not look all that comfortable walking around. His laceration required stitches and he is now scheduled for a knee MRI.
Returning to the big leagues is outfielder Blake Perkins. He appeared in 10 games for the Brewers earlier this year and managed just one hit in 12 at-bats. Since returning to the minor leagues he has a season OPS of .918, so it is worth giving him another look. Top outfield Sal Frelick is currently recovering from thumb surgery, so he is unable to be promoted at this time.
Last up is Jon Singleton. He enjoyed a nice 2022 season with the Brewers and was briefly added to the 40-man roster. He eventually was DFA’d later in the Winter, but with Darin Ruf and Jesse Winker both out he should get some chances at the plate. The 31 year old veteran hasn’t played in the major leagues since 2015, has a powerful swing, and draws a lot of walks. Keston Hiura is currently out with a PCL knee injury, so he is unable to be called up at this time.
