The Milwaukee Brewers currently have a former baseball player as their manager as Craig Counsell spent six out of his 16 MLB seasons with his home town team.  While the future of Craig Counsell managing the Brewers is up in the air, one of his former players was recently said to have the “best shot” at a future managerial job.

Former Milwaukee Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado is said to have the “best shot” at a future job as a manager.

Martin Maldonado made his MLB debut with the Brewers in 2011 and he was with the team until the conclusion of the 2016 season.  He bounced between a few different teams after his tenure in Milwaukee, but recently has found a home with the Houston Astros.

Despite being a well below average offensive catcher, Martin Maldonado’s defense and ability to work with a pitching staff has kept him in the big leagues.  The 37 year old is currently in his 13th MLB season and there have been no indications for when his playing days may be over.

Whenever the time does come for Martin Maldonado to put away the catchers gear and hang the cleats up one MLB insider believes that he has the best shot at going straight into a manager’s position.  Bob Nightengale discussed this in his latest notebook.

There’s no current player who has a better shot of going straight from the field to the manager’s chair than Astros catcher Martin Maldonado once he retires.

The topic of Martin Maldonado becoming a manager was prompted by Bob Nightengale talking about the Brewers division rival St. Louis Cardinals bringing back future hall of fame catcher Yadier Molina as a coach in 2024.  Yadier Molina has managing experience, but would be looking to come back in a coaching role for the Red Birds.

Whatever happens with Martin Maldonado in the future it is neat to see him getting this type of recognition before he retires from playing baseball.  It is possible that we continue to see him in the future, but for now his sights are set on helping the Houston Astros in the 2023 playoffs.
