The Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation has undergone significant change when compared to a season ago. At this time in 2023 they had co-aces Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff, Eric Lauer, and Adrian Houser all penciled in to start games. A year later those four players are all gone.
Looking ahead to 2024 Freddy Peralta, Wade Miley, and Colin Rea are the returners. Aaron Ashby is also back but he did not pitch in the big leagues last year after undergoing shoulder surgery. New guys like Jacob Junis, DL Hall, Joe Ross, are all in the mix for starting rotation spots and prospects like Robert Gasser, Carlos Rodriguez, and Jacob Misiorowski may play into the teams plans as well.
Out of this group of pitchers Freddy Peralta is their “new” ace and the likely favorite to start on opening day. Here’s what his GM had to say about his ascension.
Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold says Freddy Peralta is ready to be their ace.
“He’s ready for it. I mean, honestly, he’s one of the guys that you count on going out there every fifth day and taking the ball and showing everybody that he can dominate. Freddy’s built right. He’s the right type of person. He’s the guy that everyone loves, and I’m thrilled to have him at the front of our rotation.”

Freddy Peralta has proven that he can dominate as a starting pitcher.
Since switching over to a starting pitcher full time Freddy Peralta has shown that he can dominate. In 2021 he posted a 2.81 ERA over 27 starts. That year he had a 0.97 WHIP and he held opposing batters to a .165 batting average.
A year later he had a modest 3.58 ERA, but an impressive .190 batting average against. In 2023 his ERA rose to 3.86, but he finished the year strong with a 2.12 ERA over his last 11 starts and a .185 batting average against. He’s shown that he can be a very tough pitcher to get hits off of and that has contributed to a lot of his success.
Can Freddy Peralta lead the 2024 Milwaukee Brewers in innings pitched?
A season ago Freddy Peralta made a career high of 30 starts and 165.2 innings pitched. A shoulder injury cost him significant time in 2022, but in 2021 he made 27 starts and covered 144.1 innings. Covering close to 200 innings, like Corbin Burnes did, may not be reasonable but if he remains healthy he should lead the Crew in innings pitched.
