David Stearns stepped down as the Milwaukee Brewers President of Baseball Operations in the fall of 2022 and handed the reins over to Matt Arnold. He cited burnout as a primary reason for taking a step back. For the 2023 season he remains under contract with the Brew Crew but is serving in an advisory role.
There is a lot of speculation as to what will happen with David Stearns once his contract with the Brewers expires. In terms of front office personnel free agents he will be highly coveted by a lot of organizations. One team that he has constantly been linked to is his home town New York Mets.
Stearns grew up rooting for the New York Mets, so it is logical to assume that he has interest in pursuing an opportunity in their front office. Billy Eppler is currently their GM and they have the largest payroll in major league baseball, but adding a great mastermind like David Stearns could be what they need to take the next step.
A recent news column by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale indicates that David Stearns is expected to leave the Milwaukee Brewers and take a job with the New York Mets.
Bob Nightengale briefly mentions this news in his column from Sunday June 11, 2023. You can click here for the full article.
The New York Mets may be struggling with the largest payroll in baseball history, but there are no plans to fire manager Buck Showalter or GM Billy Eppler. Their jobs are not in jeopardy, at least not during the season.
They instead are expected to hire former Milwaukee Brewers GM David Stearns, whose contract expires after this season, for a high-ranking position in the front office.
Bob Nightengale does not cite any sources for this information. It is also highly unlikely that teams can talk to David Stearns while he is under contract with the Brewers. Only time will tell what he ends up doing.
