After parting ways with Hunter Renfroe and Kolten Wong, a lot of Brewer fans were left wondering which direction the team was going in. Trading away arguably two of the teams best hitters from a season ago in conjunction with never ending trade rumors surrounding Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, and Willy Adames helped add confusion to this. During the Winter Meetings, Matt Arnold made some comments regarding his plans and vision for the 2023 team.
Arnold’s comments are captured in an article from Todd Rosiak. Rosiak’s piece touches on a lot of different topics, but there are a few important quotes to share.
Here is what Arnold had to say about his plan and vision for the 2023 Brewers.
“We’re right in our competitive cycle, so I would characterize us as wanting to put a competitive team on the field in 2023.”
The Brewers are still in a window in which they can compete for a playoff spot. They are set to return the entirety of their talented starting rotation and have reportedly taken Burnes and Woodruff off the trade block. This means the Brewers are not in a rebuild and their prior moves have helped retool the roster.
Their core offensive players will also be returning next year. This includes Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez, and Christian Yelich. Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro are new additions that could play pivotal roles.
With all of these established big league players, a lot of young players are also ready for more opportunities in 2023. Brice Turang, Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick, Esteury Ruiz, Joey Wiemer, and potentially even Jackson Chourio may see playing time next year.
Arnold had this to say about his young prospects.
“The way I’m looking at this, and I think it’s important to look at it, is that we have young position players that are ready to play in the big leagues. We have to have players like that. Every team, frankly, does. That’s what we’re going to do, and that’s what’s going to happen.”
“They’re good young players, and they’re going to be very good major-league players, and I’m excited about doing that. That’s an exciting thing to be able to do for your organization. I don’t think it means that we have to take a step back.”
The Nashville Sounds were just recently announced the MiLB Organization of the Year. As mentioned above, a lot of talented players from that team are ready to play for the Brewers next year. If a few of them find success next year, that will greatly help. The good news is, there is an abundance of players to choose from.
