The Milwaukee Brewers have won three games in a row, in large part due to the play of Brice Turang and their other rookie players. In their Opening Day game against the New York Mets on Monday, Turang hit his first Major League home run: a grand slam that gave the Brewers a 10-0 lead. To start the season, the rookie second baseman is hitting .500/.615/.900 with a home run, five RBI, and two stolen bases. Along with fellow rookies Garrett Mitchell and Joey Wiemer, Turang has brought an excitement to Milwaukee baseball that has not been seen for several years.
2018 National League MVP Christian Yelich discussed the effect that the rookie players are having on the team when asked about them after the game.
Christian Yelich Has High Praise for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Rookies

“I think that he has been that way for a few years. He has a really steady heartbeat and feels like he just belongs here. He doesn’t get too up or down. Just kind of the same guy all the time. I don’t think anybody is too surprised by what he’s doing. If you spend some time around him. I think he’s a really good player and he’s been huge for us so far.”
Yelich was then asked about how much energy the young rookies have brought to the team:
“Anytime you have young players on the team, they’re going to play with energy. Especially when, um, the Big Leagues, everything is new. You know, you have a lot of energy everyday. You feel great every day. It’s super exciting. They’re all really talented players too, so they’ve been able to help us already in a bunch of different ways. Once they get settled in, kind of learn the League a little bit, they’ll be even better.”
He was then asked about how contagious their energy is for the rest of the team:
“It’s fun. We’ve got a fun group. It’s fun to come to the stadium everyday and be around those guys. It’s cool watching guys get their firsts in the league. You know? First game, first hit, first home run, you know, Gus: first strikeout. Anytime you got a lot of young players, rookies, you know, you’re always rooting for them. They play with an energy that picks everybody up.
“It’s kind of a different look for us, you know, as far as our kind of style as a team from what we’ve been able to do. Hopefully we’ll keep it going.”
Yelich concluded the interview by addressing the new Brewers’ style of offense. For years, Milwaukee relied on home runs for the bulk of their production. Now, with these fast rookies on the team, the Brewers are scoring more runs using small ball and stolen bases. During his interview, Yelich talked about how the team knew they would get off to a slow start. “Anytime you’re playing at Wrigley in Chicago at the end of March, beginning of April, you know it’s not going to be good hitting weather.”
Thankfully, their slow start did not last very long. After going scoreless in their first 16 innings of the season, the Brewers have scored 22 runs in their last 21 innings.
The future is here, and hopefully here to stay.
